Pee Wee (U12) -  Under 12 years of age by January 1st   2019

Instruction at this level is based on the fundamentals learned in Atom however no experience is required. Coaching staff will provide instruction for all levels! Coaches will encourage participation in an array of different style kayaks & canoes. There is a dryland fitness component of this program that includes short runs (with supervision) as well as circuits on club property. Children will learn proper stretching, warm up and cool down techniques in a fun and supportive environment.

It is important that children come to practices prepared with lifejacket, running shoes, swimming attire, water bottles etc. A bun is also required for war canoe and may be needed for small boats practice if going out in a canoe.

Races for this age group are 500m. All regattas will be held on Lake Banook. Abenaki has a location located next to the fence by North Star Rowing (next to Banook Canoe Club).

For those wishing to compete at a high level and who have a vested interest in dryland we also offer 1 additional hour per day that is strictly dryland. Paddlers are not required to participate however those who do will be running longer distances and should expect the practice to be very challenging.

Children from this age group may be invited to fill crew boats in Bantam races if we are short.Practice Plans will be posted on a weekly basis inside the boathouse & a meetup location for groups established on the first day of practice. Signs will be posted advising parents/children where to go.


* This *new* class will be included at regattas and is intended to give newer paddlers an experience at a start line before entering a full blown regatta program Experienced U11’s can & should be racing in the U12 competitions/regattas.


Practice Times: 10:15am-11:30am (Girls War Canoe, Boys Small Boats) and  2:00pm-3:15pm (Boys War Canoe, Girls Small Boats)

Non-Competitive Recreational - Ages 8-12years

Participants will have the opportunity to receive instruction on the fundamentals of strokes/paddling. Opportunity will be given to try various styles of kayaks/canoes & recreational canoes.

Dryland games, stretching, warm up and cool down skills will be taught by our experienced coaches however NO DRYLAND will be required (ie. Running, circuits etc)

Children participating in this program will not compete in regattas. The goal of this program is to foster a love for the water & confidence in boating. No experience is needed. Coaches will provide instruction for various levels and experience. Children should have a lifejacket and clothing attire that can get wet.


Practice Times: 3:30pm-4:45pm

Atom (U10) - Under 10 years of age by January 1st, 2019

 These head bands are available for purchase at the canteen (as well as buns)

Learn to Paddle - Ages 6-12 years

*Membership is not required to participate in this program.

PADDLING

Bantam (U14) - Under 14 years of age by January 1st, 2019

Programming at this level include more intense practice schedules and workouts are designed to prepare paddlers for higher competition levels. Training is aimed at developing aerobic fitness levels and prepare paddlers for longer races (1000 meters). C4, K4 & War Canoe will compete @ 500m distances.

There is a dryland component which can consist of running, circuits etc (supervised & groups for safety).

DO I HAVE TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET?

If you are 16 or under, you must wear an approved PFD at all times while participating in training or competition in the ADCKC or associated sanctioned events. Further, during the Just Paddle It Series, all competitors must wear an approved PFD. Anyone who cannot complete their club swim test without assistance, must wear a PFD at all times.

*An approved PFD or life jacket is any PFD approved by MOT/CCG with the notable exception that no inflatable systems are approved for use by persons under the age of 16

Summer Competitive Paddling Schedule

Adult Learn to Paddle (17+) 

Have you ever found yourself feeling jealous of the fun your kids are having? This is your chance to get a piece of the action. Join us on Tuesday evenings for Learn to Paddle Small Boats and Thursday for War Canoe!


No experience necessary. Participants should come prepared to get wet and also bring a bun for canoes.

Prior to the start of practice, a 30 minute circuit style bootcamp will be offered to those interested.

The focus will be on building core strength with touches of cardio.

(Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat however it is not mandatory)

Each practice will be a $5 drop in fee with ALL proceeds going to the club towards new equipment etc.
